NEW OFFICER IN CHARGE FOR STATION ALPENA

DETROIT - Boatswain's Mate Chief Richard Houchin relieved Boatswain's Mate Chief Bradley Adams as Officer in Charge of Coast Guard Station Alpena, MI on Friday, March 31st, in a time-honored ceremony that formally restates the continuity of the commanding officer's authority and represents a total transfer of accountability from one individual to another.

Chief Adams is transferring to Coast Guard Station Marquette, MI where he will assume the duties of Officer in Charge of the Station.  His previous assignments include USCGC Sangamon, E. Peoria, IL; Station Tybee, GA; Station Belle Isle, Detroit, MI; Station Charlevoix, MI as Executive Petty Officer and Station Alpena, MI as Officer in Charge.  He and his wife Michelle have three children.

Chief Houchin is coming from Coast Guard Cutter Sturgeon Bay, Bayonne, NJ.  His previous assignments include USCGC Laurel, Mayport, FL; USCGC Staten Island, Fort Macon, NC; Station Cortez Bradenton, FL; and Station Fort Pierce, FL.  He and his wife Candi have one son.

USCG Station Alpena is an Auxiliary Operation unit.  The Station's crew is a unique blend of talents, wisdoms and proficiency from all parts of the Coast Guard (Auxiliary, Active Duty and Reserve).  The Coast Guard has maintained a presence in the Alpena area since the late 1800's and the proud tradition of the early Coast Guard is an integral part of Station Alpena's present and future.

The current Station Alpena (AUXOP) was founded in 1988 and is currently located in the Alpena Federal Building.  The unit has two primary missions, Search and Rescue and Law Enforcement.  With a unique "team" concept, the men and women of Station Alpena dutifully execute an average of fifty Search and Rescue cases each year, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in property, but, more importantly, assisting and protecting the lives of their fellow mariners.

Station Alpena is a subordinate unit of Coast Guard Sector Detroit.  Sector Detroit directly oversees all Coast Guard missions on South Lake Huron, Lake St Clair and Western Lake Erie from Alpena, Michigan to Marblehead, Ohio.
