COAST GUARD SECTOR DETROIT TO ASSIST WITH RED RIVER FLOOD RELIEF

DETROIT - With warmer temperatures and recent storm systems impacting the Mid-West, the potential for rapid rise of water levels along the Red River System in Minnesota and North Dakota may lead to increased flooding conditions along the river.  On Thursday, April 6, 2006, thirteen personnel and two iceboats from Coast Guard Sector Detroit arrived in the North Dakota area as part of a larger contingent to respond for possible Red River Flood relief operations.  Personnel were deployed from Coast Guard Sector Detroit units in Bay City, MI, Detroit, MI and Marblehead, OH.

In September 2005, Sector Detroit deployed similar iceboats and personnel to assist with Hurricane Katrina Rescue operations in the flooded streets of New Orleans, LA.

Coast Guard Sector Detroit is headquartered at Mt. Elliott Avenue along the Detroit River and directly oversees and is responsible for all Coast Guard missions on South Lake Huron, Lake St Clair and Western Lake Erie from Alpena, Michigan to Marblehead, Ohio.
