COAST GUARD RESCUES VESSEL IN DISTRESS

Milwaukee WI - U.S. Coast Guard Station Green Bay rescued five adults and one 2 year-old child early Saturday morning in Brown County in the lower section of Green Bay.

U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan received a distress call from a recreational boater who ran aground in shallow waters around 12:30 a.m.

Rushing to the scene, a Coast Guard crew on a 27 foot boat arrived and was initially unable to reach the distressed vessel due to the shallow waters. Instead, two Coast Guard crewmembers waded through the waters in order to reach the distressed vessel. The boat crewmembers were then able to extract four of the five adults and the 2 year-old child to safety. The owner then refused assistance and desired to stay with his vessel due to impending weather. Around 7 a.m., the winds began to shift and the owner's boat regained mobility. The Coast Guard was able to then escort the vessel towards safety.

The Coast Guard then conducted a field sobriety test on the owner approximately 7 hours after responding to the initial distress call. After producing a .08 blood alcohol content level, the owner was issued a violation and was released.

The Coast Guard urges the operators of all vessels not to operate their vessel under the influence of alcohol. Alcohol is a contributing factor in approximately 40% of all recreational boating accidents. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan, located in Milwaukee, WI directly oversees all Coast Guard missions on Lake Michigan. All inquiries related to this case should be directed to Coast Guard Station Green Bay at 920-435-7042.
