COAST GUARD ICE SAFETY AND RESCUE DEMONSTRATION

DETROIT - With cold weather persisting, ice is forming on Lakes Huron, St. Clair and Erie.   The only way to ensure ice safety is to stay off the ice.  Recognizing that ice recreational activities are a part of Great Lakes heritage, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Detroit invites the media to attend an Ice Safety and Rescue Demonstration to be held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 9 at Coast Guard Small Boat Station St. Clair Shores, 24802 East Jefferson Avenue, between 9 Mile and 10 Mile Roads.

Ice rescue crewmembers from Station St. Clair Shores will discuss safety issues for ice recreation, conduct an ice rescue demonstration, and discuss various ice rescue gear used by the Coast Guard.  Crewmembers and the unit's 20 foot Ice Capable Boat will be on hand for photographs and video.

The public can contact the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Detroit Command Center 24-hours a day at 313-568-9524 or on VHF-FM Channel 16 to make reports of persons in distress in the water or ice.

The Coast Guard is the lead agency for maritime search and rescue.  To better respond to the unique conditions associated with ice rescue, the following Coast Guard stations are designated as ice rescue stations:

  • Tawas, MI
  • Saginaw, MI
  • Harbor Beach, MI
  • St. Clair Shores, MI
  • Belle Isle, MI
  • Toledo, OH
  • Marblehead, OH

All seven stations possess specialized ice rescue equipment and personal protective gear for crews.  In addition, the Coast Guard has procured specialized Ice Capable Boats and stationed them at Stations Saginaw River, St. Clair Shores, Belle Isle and Marblehead.
