Coast Guard Icebreaker Headed to Harsens Island

CITY -  Detroit. Coast Guard Sector Detroit has dispatched a 140' ice-breaking tug Monday afternoon in an attempt to break loose the North Channel of the St. Clair River to free the Harsens Island Ferry.  Due to a build up of ice in the North Channel, which separates Harsens Island from Algonac, MI, the Champions Auto Ferry, the only link to and from the island, has been unable to operate since last Friday.  Heavy ice flowing down the St. Clair River from Lake Huron has collected in the lower St. Clair River due to the heavy ice conditions in Lake St. Clair.  Icebreaking operations are expected to commence early Tuesday morning, 27 February, with the aim of re-establishing regular ferry service to Harsens Island.
