USCG MARINE SAFETY UNIT CLEVELAND TRANSFERS COMMAND CLEVELAND - Cmdr. Joseph Gleason will transfer command of U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Cleveland to Lt. Cmdr. Linda Sturgis, here, in a change-of-command ceremony tomorrow at 11 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the Marine Safety Unit Cleveland, located at 1055 East Ninth Street, across from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Cmdr. Gleason will depart to U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters, in Washington, D.C., where he will serve as the Exercise Coordinator at the newly commissioned USCG Deployable Operations Group. Lt. Cmdr. Sturgis is coming from U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters. The change of command is a time honored tradition and deeply rooted in Coast Guard and Naval history. The event signifies a total transfer of responsibility, authority and accountability for the command. The ceremony is witnessed by all members so that they all know exactly when the transfer of leadership takes place. Gleason, the men and women of MSU Cleveland have responded to the largest oil spill on the Great Lakes in the last 10 years; trained more than 500 local emergency responders on the Incident Command System; conducted more than 50 positive control and security boardings in support of homeland security; inspected more than 213 vessels; and are credited with having the most robust exercise/simulated disaster program in the Coast Guard, ensuring federal, state and local responders are better prepared to meet the expectations of Northeast Ohio's citizens in a time of need. |
