Neah Bay
Neah Bay
CLEVELAND (Feb. 23, 2007) -- The Coast Guard Cutter Neah Bay returned to the Cleveland Moorings February 23 after an area familiarization mission to the Grand River. The Neah Bay's exercise coincided with a visit from Rep. Steven LaTourette (R-14/OH) to Station Fairport. In addition to Area Fam, the Neah Bay altered its mission to recommence flood control operations in the Grand River along with the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Samuel Risley. The Neah Bay steamed as far as the Chagrin River, but it had to return to base because of excessively thick ice abeam, often an average 12-inches in thickness. The decision to return was due to the fact local television media and The Plain Dealer rode along. Had the Neah Bay proceeded with the media on board, the trip to the Grand River would have taken more than 20 hours from strong nothwest winds and ice accumulation.
