COAST GUARD TRANSPORTS MAN WITH LEG INJURY DULUTH, Minn. -- Coast Guard Station Duluth medically evacuated a 42-year-old crewman from a dredge barge after his foot became wedged between a wire rope and a bit near the Blatnik Bridge today at approximately 10:30 a.m. The station arrived on-scene just minutes after receiving the call for assistance, and crewmembers prevented a near-amputation by applying direct pressure to the man's leg. Once on-scene, they also conferenced with the flight surgeon, who recommended medical evacuation. The crew transferred the man to awaiting Emergency Medical Services, which then transported him to St. Marys Hospital. Upon transfer, the man was in shock. Marine Safety Duluth is conducting an investigation of the injury. For further inquiries, contact the Ninth Coast Guard District Public Affairs Office at 216-902-6020 or the duty cell at 216-310-2608. ###
