COAST GUARD RESCUES TWO AFTER BOAT TAKES ON WATER

MUSKEGON, Mich. - The Coast Guard rescued two people from their boat because it was taking on water approximately three nautical miles off the entrance to White Lake at approximately 4:00 p.m. today.

A Coast Guard Station Muskegon 30-foot response boat was launched to assist the stranded people.  The Coast Guard determined a good estimated position based on the boater's radio call and points he identified.  The boater called the Coast Guard using a radio onboard.

Once the rescue boat was on scene, the Station Muskegon crew retrieved the two boaters from the water. The crew then transferred them to a nearby service boat and made arrangements for a salvage company to collect the flooded boat.

The boaters were not in need of any medical attention and were taken to a nearby dock.

The Coast Guard recommends to boaters to have a radio or cell phone onboard in case they need assistance.  In this case, the Coast Guard was able to assemble and execute a rescue plan in a timely manner based on the victim's information.

For additional media inquiries or more information, contact Petty Officer Matthew Schofield, a spokesman for the Ninth Coast Guard District at (216) 310-2608.
