COAST GUARD, PARK RANGERS MEDICALLY EVACUATE MAN NORTH MANITOU, Mich. - The Coast Guard and National Park Rangers medically evacuated a 30 to 35-year-old male from North Manitou Island after he was experiencing symptoms of epilepsy at approximately 4:00 p.m. today. A Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City HH-65C Dolphin helicopter was launched to assist the ailing man. Soon after launch, the Traverse City crew picked up a North Manitou based Park Ranger to take along to assist in the search for the victim. "It was tough to locate him at first, we picked up the Park Ranger and went to a general area and deployed the rescue swimmer and the ranger to try to find him. Once they were on the ground, we had to return to fuel up and come back to find them," said Lt. Shawn McMillan, a pilot from the Traverse City crew. The people that the man was with were scout troops and had made a make-shift litter to carry him out with. They trekked with the victim in their litter to a safe landing area. The Coast Guard helicopter took the man to Munson Hospital to awaiting Emergency Medical Services.
