Coast Guard teams up to clean up Milwaukee beaches

MILWAUKEE -- Coast Guard members based in Milwaukee worked to clean up of five local beaches stretching from the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center to South Shore Park, Wednesday, to promote Earth Day consciousness.

Members from Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan, Coast Guard Station Milwaukee and local Coast Guard Auxiliarists participated in the clean up effort.

"This event complimented our stewardship with our environmental neighbors," said Lt. Kristie Cabanting, Public Affairs Officer for Sector Lake Michigan, "This joint community event emphasized the Coast Guard’s commitment toward people working together in the preservation and protection of Lake Michigan's coastline."

The Coast Guard wants to remind the boating public that dumping garbage into Lake Michigan is prohibited and violators are subject to a fine of up to $25,000 and up to 6 years imprisonment.
