National Safe Boating Week -- Day 4: Life Jackets

CLEVELAND - In recognition of the fourth day of National Safe Boating Week, the Ninth Coast Guard District would like to remind the boating public, operators and passengers, to "always" wear a lifejacket or personal floatation device (PFD).

● All recreational boats must carry one wearable PFD (Type I, II, III or Type V PFD) for each person aboard.  Any boat 16ft and longer (except canoes and kayaks) must also carry one throwable PFD (Type IV PFD).

● The law states you must have a PFD on board, but the Coast Guard recommends you wear your PFD at all times when boating.  It is much more difficult to locate, access or don a PFD at the moment the accident occurs.

● Some states require that children wear PFDs.  Factors such as age, size of the boat/vessel and/or boating operations play a factor.  The Coast Guard recommends ALL children wear a PFD at all time when on a boat or in the water.

Additional information on life jackets (PFDs), can be found at http://www.uscgboating.org/safety/fedreqs/equ_pfd.htm.
