Coast Guard tows disabled vessel,
urges boaters to have means of communication

CLEVELAND - U.S. Coast Guard Station Cleveland Harbor towed a disabled vessel to shore at approximately 2:00 p.m. Tuesday.

The disabled vessel was stranded near the Cleveland Harbor break-wall and had no functioning means of communication aboard.

A nearby good samaritan used a marine-band radio to hail the Coast Guard.

"It is really importatnt to make sure you have a fully-functioning marine-band radio," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Tim Lieb, a Boatswain's Mate at Station Cleveland Harbor and coxwain of the 41-foot utility boat (UTB).

In conjunction with National Safe Boating Week, the Ninth Coast Guard District would like to remind the boating public of the importance of having a marine-band radio and signaling devices on board, as well as the filing of a float plan prior to getting underway.

For further information or media inquiries, contact Petty Officer Brandon Blackwell, a spokesperson for the Ninth Coast Guard District at 216-310-2608.
