Coast Guard to conduct flare, cold water, helicopter demonstrations
CLEVELAND - In recognition of National Safe Boating Week, members of the Ninth Coast Guard District Search-and-Rescue Command Center will participate in a series of search-and-rescue demonstrations, Thursday, here at Edgewater Park. The demonstrations, which begin at 9 a.m., will include: employment of distress flares, a cold water swim to identify the signs of hypothermia and a helicopter hoist by an Air Station Detroit HH-65C Dolphin helicopter. Media is invited to attend the demonstration and Coast Guard boating safety spokespersons will be available for interviews. "There is no better time to get a boating safety message out than 'right now'," said Greg Fondran, Ninth District SAR controller. "Memorial Day weekend is approaching and many Great Lakes boaters already have their vessels in the water."
