Coast Guard rescues five near Jackson Park Coast Guard Station Calumet Harbor launched a 25-foot response boat after receiving a call from emergency dispatch at approximately 7:15 p.m. stating an 18-foot powerboat was taking on water approximately 100 yards offshore. Once on scene, the Coast Guard response boat brought all five people onboard and transported them to Jackson Park Harbor. “They were taking on water pretty fast,” said Petty Officer Justin Buggan, coxswain at Station Calumet Harbor. “They didn’t report any injuries.” All five passengers were wearing lifejackets. The Coast Guard requires all recreational boats to carry one wearable Personal Flotation Device (Type I, II, III or Type V PFD) for each person aboard. Any boat 16ft and longer (except canoes and kayaks) must also carry one throwable PFD (Type IV PFD). The law states you must have a PFD on board, but the Coast Guard recommends everyone to wear a PFD at all times when boating. It is much more difficult to locate, access or don a PFD at the moment the accident occurs.
