CGC MACKINAW TO BEGIN ICEBREAKING IN WHITEFISH BAY SAULT STE. MARIE, MI - CGC MACKINAW will lock through the Soo Locks on the morning of March 19, 2004 and continue transiting though the upper St. Marys River to Whitefish Bay to conduct icebreaking operations. The CGC MACKINAW a 290' icebreaker home ported in Cheboygan, MI will lock up to Whitefish Bay five days before the official opening of the locks in order to prepare a path in the ice for the commercial traffic on March 25, 2004. This icebreaking mission is part of Operation Taconite, the largest icebreaking operation within the United States, in which Coast Guard icebreakers are breaking ice in navigable waterways throughout Lake Superior, Whitefish Bay, St. Marys River, and the Straits of Mackinac. Operation Taconite began on January 9, 2004 and will continue through mid April. The Coast Guard would like to remind all recreational ice users to plan their activities carefully, use caution on the ice, and stay away from shipping channels, which are being groomed for the opening of the shipping season. ###
