AIRBOAT ARRIVES AT STATION SAULT FOR ICE OPERATIONS

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI - A 23 ft. airboat with the ability to transit on ice and water has arrived at Coast Guard Station Sault Ste. Marie for ice search and rescue testing and training on March 28, 2004.  The airboat and two crew members have been temporarily transferred from United States Coast Guard Station St. Clair Shores, MI for approximatley two weeks in order to test the boat's abilities on the ice conditions in the St. Marys River.

The airboat has an endurance of approximately 3 hours and can go up to 25 knots (about 30mph) depending on the combination of ice and water in which it is transiting.  The Coast Guard will be conducting a demonstration of the airboats abilities the morning of Wednesday, March 31st at 1000 in the morning at the old Neebish Island Ferry Landing and boat launch on 15 Mile Road.  Please contact LTJG Samuel Kasten for any additional information on the location and time of the demonstration.
