COAST GUARD AIRBOAT DEMONSTRATION

BARBEAU,MI - Coast Guard Station Sault Ste. Marie, MI will conduct airboat operations between Barbeau, MI and Neebish Island, MI at 1300 on April 01, 2005.

The Coast Guard airboat will depart from Cozy Corner Landing and transit to the Neebish Island Ferry Landing in order to facilitate the receipt and delivery of Neebish Island residents’ postal mail. Postal service to Neebish Island has been interrupted for the past three days, due to ice conditions in the Rock Cut area. These ice conditions prevented the local ferry from conducting its daily transits to and from the island delivering both residents and needed supplies.

The 18 ft. airboat has the ability to transit on ice and water and is utilized by the Coast Guard to conduct ice search and rescue operations. The airboat has an endurance of 4 hours and a maximum transit speed of 15 knots, depending on the current ice and water conditions. The airboat has been temporarily transferred from Coast Guard Station Marble Head, OH to Coast Guard Station Sault Ste. Marie as a safety precaution to execute any ice search and rescue missions and to act as emergency transportation for island residents when ferry service is interrupted. Media are invited to observe the airboat as it demonstrates its ability to transit the icy conditions of the St. Mary’s River. Please contact ENS William White II for any additional information on the location and time of the demonstration.
