Coast Guard seeks help to identify rescued swimmers

CLEVELAND — The U.S. Coast Guard is seeking help from the public to identify those involved in the rescue of several swimmers from violent rip tides at Frankfort Beach, Mich., by an off-duty Coast Guardsman and local citizens on Aug. 15, 2010.

The Coast Guard is compiling information about the case and, if you are one of those who was rescued or can identify someone who was involved, you are asked to please contact Ens. Ali Marie Shafovaloff at (414) 747-7137 with that information.

Coast Guard Airman Thomas McArthur, then assigned to Coast Guard Station Frankfort, rescued approximately 12 people, including a family of four, who were in danger of drowning due to dangerous rip tides. McArthur jumped into the water and guided them to safety or pulled them to safety by a lifeline from the pier.

Following the rescue, many of those who were rescued departed the scene.

McArthur has since transferred to Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Mich., where he is training to become an aviation survival technician.
