CLEVELAND — Personnel from Coast Guard Station Frankfort, Mich., hosted a class of three and four-year-olds from the Betsie Bay Cooperative Preschool, Wednesday.

The children visited the station, were given tours of the unit's boats and talked to crewmembers about the importance of wearing life jackets anytime that they are on an boat or near the water.

"It was great having the young children from Betsie Bay Cooperative Preschool in Frankfort come to the station learn about what we do, answer their questions and educate them about boating safety," said Petty Officer 1st Class Andrew Bowe, executive petty officer of Station Frankfort. "It is never too early to teach kids about the importance of water safety and wearing a life jacket at a very young age."

The event was held as a precursor to National Safe Boating Week, an annual event held the week before Memorial Day Weekend designed to heighten awareness among recreational boaters of the importance of boating responsibly and wearing a life jacket at all times.

PHOTOs: Coast Guard nears completion of seasonal buoy replacement operation throughout Great Lakes

CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard is nearing completion of the mission to replace seasonal aids to navigation this week throughout the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Operation Spring Restore, an annual mission to verify and replace 1,281 aids to navigation throughout the Great Lakes region, is nearly 80% complete and almost four weeks ahead of schedule, due to an unusually light 2011/2012 ice season.

The mission began on March 13. Click here to read about Operation Spring Restore's kickoff this year.

Returning ATON to their proper stations is important because the lighted and unlighted buoys and beacons permit safe navigation along the Great Lakes.

"After an unseasonably warm winter, we're ahead of schedule," said Lt. j.g. David Lieberman, 9th Coast Guard District cutter operations officer. "It's a good thing, too, because boaters are hitting the water earlier than they traditionally would, and these aids are critical for safe navigation."

Spring Restore's counterpart is Operation Fall Retrieve, which takes place in the Fall. Fall Retrieve involves the removal of the aids due to the decreased vessel traffic or replacement with sturdier winter aids to minimize damage from ice and severe weather.

MILWAUKEE — The Coast Guard held a ceremony and demonstration in Milwaukee Friday to accept the new Rescue 21 communications system at Sector Lake Michigan, which spans all but the northernmost portions of Lake Michigan.

Rescue 21, the Coast Guard’s advanced command, control and direction-finding communications system, was created to more efficiently locate mariners in distress to save lives and property at sea and on navigable waterways.

"Rescue 21 will significantly enhance the sector's ability to hear and quickly answer the call when assistance is needed," said Rear Adm. Michael Parks, commander of the 9th Coast Guard District. "Rescue 21 helps take some of the 'search' out of 'search and rescue.' It also reduces unneccesary and wasteful responses to hoax calls. But most of all, it saves lives."

Since Rescue 21 became operational at Sector Lake Michigan in December 2011, it has been used in more than 58 search and rescue cases.
CLEVELAND — Ice rescue instructors from the Coast Guard's Ice Capabilities Center of Excellence, located at Station/Aids-to-Navigation Team Saginaw River in Essexville, Mich., returned Sunday from two weeks in Alaska, where they trained alongside local first responders in ice rescue techniques.

The Coast Guardsmen from the 9th Coast Guard District in the Great Lakes and the 17th Coast Guard District in Alaska trained with about 40 local emergency responders in Anchorage, Nome and Barrow, Alaska.

Although the staff of the ICCE are not strangers to training ice rescue teams, the Alaska trip allowed for their exchange of training techniques with a culture of people who endure some of the harshest conditions on earth

"The biggest thing that I brought back was reassurance that the techniques, skills and equipment we train at the Ice Center are similar to techniques used in the Arctic region," said Master Chief Petty Officer Gerald Backus, officer-in-charge of STANT Saginaw River.

Backus notes another success came following a conversation he had with the fire chief in Barrow.

"He mentioned this was the first training event they've held in which they were able to get participation from so many emergency service members within the community."
