MARINETTE MARINE DELIVERS CUTTER ALDER TO U. S. COAST GUARD MARINETTE, Wis -- On September 2, 2004 the U.S. Coast Guard will officially accept the Coast Guard Cutter ALDER.  The cutter was launched into the Menominee River at Marinette Marine Corporation on February 7, 2004 and has since been undergoing outfitting and sea trials.  This date marks the first day the ship's crew will take responsibility for the cutter and the cutter will be placed into a temporary “In-Commission Special” status.  The cutter's official commissioning is tentatively scheduled to take place at her homeport of Duluth, Minnesota on June 10, 2005.   ALDER is the last in a fleet of 16 Juniper class, 225-foot sea-going buoy tenders, built at the Marinette Marine Corporation shipyard.  The Coast Guard's Buoy Tender Replacement Project, a major acquisition to replace the WW II era 180-foot buoy tenders, began in 1996 when the Cutter Juniper was commissioned.   ALDER’s primary missions are Aids to Navigation, Marine Environmental Protection, Search and Rescue, and Domestic Ice Breaking.  The principal characteristics of ALDER are: Length: 225 ft, Beam: 46 ft, Draft: 13 ft, and Displacement: 2,000 Long Tons. The major equipment aboard ALDER will be 2 Caterpillar 3608, 3100 Brake Horse Power Engines for propulsion which will power a single shaft, Bird Johnson Controllable Pitch Propeller; a Bow and Stern thruster, which provide 460 and 550 Horsepower respectively; in addition to one 20 Ton Hydraulic 60 foot telescoping beam Appleton Crane.  Power generation is to be provided by 2 Caterpillar 3508, 450 kilowatts generators.    Thursday’s ceremony will commence at approximately 11 AM onboard the cutter.  Marty Lakes, Vice President and General Manager of Marinette Marine Corporation will present the cutter to Commander Jim Knight, Commanding Officer of the Project Resident Office who will receive the cutter on behalf of the Coast Guard.  The responsibility of the cutter is then transferred to the Commanding Officer of ALDER, Lieutenant Commander Steven Teschendorf along with the crew of 8 officers and 42 enlisted who become the “plankowners” of the new vessel.   Media:  Press credential must be picked up at the Marinette Marine Security Desk.

REP. AND MRS. HASTERT VISIT THE NEW US COAST GUARD ICEBREAKER MACKINAW UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT MARINETTE MARINE CORPORATION MARINETTE, WI - Mrs. Jean Hastert, the sponsor for the new Coast Guard Icebreaker Mackinaw (WLBB 30), visited Marinette Marine Corporation today to see the ship under construction.  Mrs. Hastert was accompanied by her husband, Rep. J. Dennis Hastert Speaker of the US House of Representatives, and Rear Admiral Dale Gabel, the USCG Assistant Commandant for Acquisition. MARINETTE MARINE CORPORATION DELIVERS CUTTER SEQUOIA TO U.S. COAST GUARD   MARINETTE, Wis -- On April 21, 2004 the U.S. Coast Guard will officially accept the Coast Guard Cutter SEQUOIA.  The cutter was launched into the Menominee River at Marinette Marine Corporation on August 23, 2003 and has since been undergoing outfitting and sea trials.  This date marks the first day the ship's crew will take responsibility for the cutter and the cutter will be placed into a temporary “In-Commission Special” status.  The cutter's official commissioning will take place at her homeport of Apra Harbor, Guam.    Coast Guard Cutter SEQUOIA is the fifteenth Juniper Class Seagoing Buoy Tender and the tenth “B Class” cutter built by Marinette Marine Corporation.  Currently the Coast Guard has contracted for eleven “B Class” cutters.  The “B Class” cutters will join the five “A Class” cutters built by Marinette Marine that are operating worldwide   SEQUOIA’s primary missions are Aids to Navigation, Marine Environmental Protection, Search and Rescue, and Domestic Ice Breaking.  The principal characteristics of SEQUOIA are: Length: 225 ft, Beam: 46 ft, Draft: 13 ft, and Displacement: 2,000 Long Tons. ATLANTIC AREA COMMANDER AND WIFE TO LAUNCH LAST OF THE JUNIPER CLASS BUOY TENDERS   MARINETTE, Wis. – Vice Admiral James D. Hull, Commander, Coast Guard Atlantic Area, will be the keynote speaker at the launch of the Coast Guard Cutter Alder Saturday in Marinette, Wis.    Alder is the last of the fleet of Juniper B-class, 225-foot sea-going buoy tenders, to be built at the Marinette Marine Corporation shipyard.  The Coast Guard's Buoy Tender Replacement Project, a major acquisition to replace the WW II era 180-foot buoy tenders, began in 1996 when the Cutter Juniper was commissioned.   Mrs. Judith Hull will serve as the ship’s sponsor and christen the vessel as Coast Guard Cutter Alder, when it is launched from the Marinette shipyard.  Mrs. Hull will christen the Alder by breaking a bottle of champagne across its bow.   The primary mission of the Juniper-class seagoing buoy tender is to maintain the largest buoys in the Coast Guard’s inventory of more than 50,000 aids to navigation, while also supporting every other Coast Guard role and mission.    With a crew of six officers and 34 enlisted personnel, the Alder is scheduled to be delivered to the Coast Guard Sept. 2 and should arrive in Duluth, Minn., the cutter’s homeport, later in the month.  Alder is powered by two Caterpillar diesel engines enabling it to reach speeds of 15 knots as well as break through 14 inches of ice. In addition, it is equipped with an oil spill recovery system and some of the latest technology that includes state of the art navigation, communication and security systems.   The Coast Guard’s Atlantic Area, which Hull oversees, spans 40 states and includes the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.  The area comprises 4.36 million square miles of navigable water, including the Gulf of Mexico, most of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.    “Judith and I are very proud to welcome the last of the Juniper-class buoy tenders to the Coast Guard,” Hull said.  “Alder will complete an outstanding addition to the Coast Guard’s fleet.”   The Alder’s launch ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Central Standard Time at the Marinette Marine Corporation shipyard located on the Menominee River in Marinette, Wis.    Media:  Press credential must be picked up at the Marinette Marine Security Desk.   ###

NEW COAST GUARD CUTTER TO BE LAUNCHED MARINETTE, WISC. — On Saturday, February 7 the Marinette Marine Corp. (MMC) will launch the U. S. Coast Guard cutter Alder. Alder is part of the plan to replace the Coast Guard’s World War II era 180-foot cutters. Alder is a 225-foot Juniper Class seagoing buoy tender with icebreaking capabilities.  It is the 16th cutter of a planned fleet of sixteen to be built by MMC in Marinette. MMC also built fourteen 175-foot Keeper Class coastal buoy tenders for the Coast Guard.  In October 2001 MMC was award the contract to build an icebreaker to replace the Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw ‘the Great Lakes Icebreaker’. Mrs. Judy Hull, wife of Vice Admiral Hull, is the cutter’s sponsor. Vice Admiral James Hull, the Atlantic Area commander, will be the keynote speaker.  Alder will be homeported in Duluth, Minn. The cutter is scheduled to be delivered to the Coast Guard on September 2 and should arrive at its homeport in Late September.
