<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify">MARINETTE, Wis <B><I>--</I></B><B style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal"> </B><SPAN style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold">On September 2, 2004</SPAN><B style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal"> </B>the U.S. Coast Guard will officially accept the Coast Guard Cutter ALDER.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>The cutter was launched into the Menominee River at Marinette Marine Corporation on February 7, 2004 and has since been undergoing outfitting and sea trials.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>This date marks the first day the ship's crew will take responsibility for the cutter and the cutter will be placed into a temporary “In-Commission Special” status.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>The cutter's official commissioning is tentatively scheduled to take place at her homeport of Duluth, Minnesota on June 10, 2005.</P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify">&nbsp;<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify">ALDER is the last in a fleet of 16 Juniper class, 225-foot sea-going buoy tenders, built at the Marinette Marine Corporation shipyard.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>The Coast Guard's Buoy Tender Replacement Project, a major acquisition to replace the WW II era 180-foot buoy tenders, began in 1996 when the Cutter Juniper was commissioned.</P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify">&nbsp;<o:p></o:p></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify">ALDER’s primary missions are Aids to Navigation, Marine Environmental Protection, Search and Rescue, and Domestic Ice Breaking.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>The principal characteristics of ALDER are: Length: 225 ft, Beam: 46 ft, Draft: 13 ft, and Displacement: 2,000 Long Tons. The major equipment aboard ALDER will be 2 Caterpillar 3608, 3100 Brake Horse Power Engines for propulsion which will power a single shaft, Bird Johnson Controllable Pitch Propeller; a Bow and Stern thruster, which provide 460 and 550 Horsepower respectively; in addition to one 20 Ton Hydraulic 60 foot telescoping beam Appleton Crane.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Power generation is to be provided by 2 Caterpillar 3508, 450 kilowatts generators.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN></P>

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold">Thursday’s</SPAN><B style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal"> </B>ceremony will commence at approximately 11 AM onboard the cutter.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Marty Lakes, Vice President and General Manager of Marinette Marine Corporation will present the cutter to Commander Jim Knight, Commanding Officer of the Project Resident Office who will receive the cutter on behalf of the Coast Guard.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>The responsibility of the cutter is then transferred to the Commanding Officer of ALDER, Lieutenant Commander <SPAN style="mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Arial Unicode MS'">Steven Teschendorf</SPAN> along with the crew of 8 officers and 42 enlisted who become the “plankowners” of the new vessel.</P>

J. Dennis Hastert Speaker of the US House of Representatives, and Rear Admiral Dale Gabel, the USCG Assistant Commandant for Acquisition. Mrs. Hastert plans to return to MMC to christen the new USCGC Mackinaw at the launch ceremony scheduled for March 19th 2005.</SPAN>

<P class=MsoBlockText style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; tab-stops: .25in"><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Times">With a crew of six officers and 34 enlisted personnel, the Alder is scheduled to be delivered to the Coast Guard Sept. 2 and should arrive in Duluth, Minn., the cutter’s homeport, later in the month.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>Alder is powered by two Caterpillar diesel engines enabling it to reach speeds of 15 knots as well as break through 14 inches of ice. In addition, it is equipped with an oil spill recovery system and some of the latest technology that includes state of the art navigation, communication and security systems.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

<P class=bodysingle style="MARGIN: auto 0in"><FONT face=Arial><I><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt">Alder</SPAN></I><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt"> is part of the plan to replace the Coast Guard’s World War II era 180-foot cutters.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P>
<P class=bodysingle style="MARGIN: auto 0in"><FONT face=Arial><I><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt">Alder</SPAN></I><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt"> is a 225-foot Juniper Class seagoing buoy tender with <U>icebreaking capabilities</U>.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>It is the 16<SUP>th </SUP>cutter of a planned fleet of sixteen to be built by MMC in Marinette. MMC also built fourteen 175-foot Keeper Class coastal buoy tenders for the Coast Guard.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp; </SPAN>In October 2001 MMC was award the contract to build <SPAN style="COLOR: black">an icebreaker to replace the Coast Guard cutter <I>Mackinaw</I> ‘the Great Lakes Icebreaker’.</SPAN></SPAN></FONT></P>
